For anyone who thinks short hair isn’t versatile, all you have to do is look at Rosamund Pike to know that absolutely isn’t true. The Gone Girl star doesn’t just have a bob, she also has an undershave-and she still manages to get all of her hair up off her neck. It just takes some hair spray and a run to the drugstore for extra bobby pins (unless you want to start scrounging in your purse or under your couch, because you’re going to need a lot of them).
The thing is, there’s no real rhyme or reason to pinning up short hair. Looking at Pike’s hairstyle from the back: It actually looks like she may have secured what hair she could into a ponytail and then taken the shorter front pieces and pinned them back at random, covering the ponytail by letting the ends stick out and loop in random places. If none of your hair can go into a ponytail, then work in pieces: Take small sections and pin them down one by one, crisscrossing your bobby pins to ensure security. Oh, that’s another thing-it’s OK if a few of your bobby pins show. Hairstylist Mark Townsend
once told me he likes the look of a few exposed bobby pins because it gives the style a bit of an edge and some character (yes, even on the red carpet). He also said it’s easier to do these types of styles on unwashed hair (hooray!) and recommended spraying your bobby pins with dry shampoo to give them extra grip.
So if you’re itching to get your hair out of your face this week, try re-creating Pike’s cool updo. If you’re itching to make a major chop, here’s just one more reason why going short is awesome.
